Static or dynamic: which QR code should I make?

Every QR code you make in Enqode QR is either static or dynamic. Some types let you choose; others are always one or the other, and the generator marks them Static or Dynamic next to the type's name.

Static QR codes

A static code has its content written straight into the pattern.

  • The content cannot change once the code is printed.
  • Scans are not tracked, because the scan never passes through Enqode QR.
  • Choose static when the content will never change, such as Wi-Fi details on a sign.

Dynamic QR codes

A dynamic code holds a short Enqode tracking link that forwards people to your content.

  • You can change the destination at any time, even after printing.
  • Every scan is tracked, so you get scan analytics.
  • You can pause it, add a password, set an expiry date or a scan limit, and restrict it by country.

Which types can be which

  • You choose: Link, Product, Facebook, Instagram, YouTube, Google Form, Review, Payment, WhatsApp and Location. Pick Static QR ("Fixed destination") or Dynamic QR ("Edit URL · Track scans") above the form.
  • Always static: Wi-Fi, Email, SMS, Call and Text. These are not web links, so the phone reads the content straight from the code.
  • Always dynamic: File, Menu, Social Media, Multi-URL, App Store, Video, Landing Page, Image, Audio, vCard and Event. These build a page hosted by Enqode QR, which is what makes them editable and trackable.

For Location, Product and WhatsApp, dynamic is only available on some tabs. For example, a Location code made from coordinates is always static, while one made from a maps link can be dynamic. The generator tells you when Dynamic QR is not available.
